I best enjoy a restaurant when I know what to expect of its cuisine so a little search about Rossopomodoro introduced me further to Naples, the home city of this restaurant, where pizza originated. (And thus the term, ?Neapolitan?). Well, if pizza originated in Rossopomodoro?s home city, how can they go wrong in making it?
I was excited to try their traditionally-cooked pizza so my friends and I chose Fru Fru, the trio of flavors in one oval dough to get a taste of three in one. The freshness and rich taste of the ingredients are really evident on each square slice. The margherita, named after Queen Margherita?s visit to Naples, is simple but lovely to bite. The tomato sauce rich ? but not overwhelming. The middle portion of salami and ricotta also delicious and my favorite of the bunch. The rocket leaves and parmesan part was interesting; the bitter-mustardy taste of the leaves went well with the sharp, complex taste of the cheese shavings. The pizza dough is chewy, to the point that it almost feels and tastes like the thick Arabic bread available across Riyadh.
The meatball appetizer, Polpettuccia, wasn?t as good as we had hoped. We liked the beef strips though. Their Verdummara salad was bland and we had to ask for more dressing. Still, even with a new dose of the white salty sauce, the salad didn?t taste much better.
In contrast, the Ravioli was delicious. The ricotta, basil, and creamy tangerine tomato sauce went superbly together. However, 55 riyals for 4 pieces of filled pasta may be a little steep for some. While the fresh ingredients are also evident in their salad, meatball appetizer, and pasta, I suggest you stick to the pizza.
This Neapolitan restaurant in Riyadh is housed in a lovely white building on Tahlia Street. The red sign of Rossopomodoro is brilliant in the morning sun; even during the night when the busy street is brightly-lit. As for the atmosphere inside, its really quite nice with a rustic but vibrant feel with touches of wood here and there.
Ladies will enjoy the tall chairs for conversations and superior view of the huge pizza oven over dinner, while families can choose to dine in paneled tables for privacy. Rossopomodoro has a lot of branches worldwide and the Riyadh branch is the second one in Saudi Arabia (the first having been reviewed over at Jeddah Food here). So definitely, one cannot ignore Rossopomodo. It is, after all, a slice of success.
