Women?s cricket on the verge of a ?massive sea change?, says Alan Isaac ? Cricket News Update
With less than 90 days to go into the ninth edition of the ICC Women?s Cricket World Cup, to be held in Mumbai, India, from January 31 to March 09 next year, the ICC President Sir Alan Isaac has said that women?s cricket is on the verge of a ?massive sea change?.
"I feel that we are on the verge of a massive sea change in the women's game and where better for that to take place than in the great city of Mumbai," said Isaac during a media interaction on Monday.
"This will be the third time that India has staged the Women's World Cup but this could be by far the most significant," the ICC president added further.
The latest edition of the premier international championship of women's One Day International cricket will see eight teams competing for the coveted trophy. Hosts India, England, Australia and New Zealand qualified for the marquee tournament after finishing as the top four in the previous edition in Australia, in 2009. While Pakistan, Sri Lanka, West Indies and South Africa have made it to the tournament through the qualifiers.
The participating teams have been divided into two groups of four each. India, West Indies, England and Sri Lanka have been drawn in Group A while the other half includes women from Australia, Pakistan, New Zealand and South Africa.
The tournament gets underway at the Bandra Kurla Complex of Mumbai on January 31, 2013, with Australia taking on Pakistan. The hosts, India, will also play their tournament opener on the same day, against West Indies at the Wankhede Stadium, in Mumbai.
Reigning champions, England, will begin their title defence against Sri Lanka at the same Wankhede venue on February 2.
The initial stage of the global event will see one team eliminated from each group, while the remaining sides will progress to the Super Six phase. The final of the esteemed tournament will be held at the Cricket Club of India ground on February 17.
A total of 25 matches will be played across five venues in Mumbai - Wankhede Stadium, Cricket Club of India (CCI), DY Patil Stadium, Bandra Kurla Complex (BKC), and Middle Income Group Club Ground (MIG), but only ten matches will be broadcasted live.
