Apple Retail Stores replace iMacs with iPads for kids
Apple Retail Stores have replaced the iMacs that traditional served as their "kid's table" with iPads. The tables, which had previously been decked out with a quartet of iMacs, now sport 4 iPads instead.

Most-liked cities: Seattle and Portland tops, Detroit dead last (poll)

New research from Public Policy Polling finds that Seattle, Wash., and Portland, Ore., are America's most favorably viewed cities. Conversely, Detroit is the nation's least favorably viewed city.
The report found that 57 percent of respondents in the poll view Seattle favorably, compared with 14 percent who view it unfavorably. Similarly, Portland has a favorability rating of 52 percent with only 12 percent taking a negative view of the City of Roses.
In other words, if the Pacific Northwest were a politician, it would be more popular than President Obama and Mitt Romney.
Perhaps not coincidentally, a recent Yahoo News story found Seattle and Portland to be the top two best cities for hipsters.
And while Romney counts Michigan as one of his "home states," he wouldn't want Detroit's poll numbers. Only 22 percent of those polled by PPP had a favorable view of the Motor City, with 49 percent taking a negative view.
These days, it would seem that Portlandia is more popular than Robocop.
The only other two major cities in the poll to have a net negative view are both in California: Los Angeles (33-40) and Oakland (21-39). However, California is home to the 11th most popular city, San Francisco (48-29).
The poll demographics also showed some results that PPP says line up with national political trends. For example, the biggest political gap in the poll was over the nation's capital, Washington, D.C. Democrats like it by a net margin of 44 percent;? Republicans dislike it by 24 percent.
Black and white Americans also had differing views on some of the cities in the poll. Black respondents said they like Los Angeles by a margin of 35 percent, while white respondents dislike it by 16 percent.

Boston (52-17), Atlanta (51-19), Phoenix (49-18), Dallas (48-21), New York (49-23), New Orleans (47-24), Houston (45-22), Salt Lake City (43-20), Philadelphia (42-22), Baltimore (37-24), Las Vegas (43-33), Chicago (42-33), Cleveland (32-25), and Miami (36-33).

Polar bears older than previously thought
New analysis reveals the Arctic species dates back about 600,000 years

Polar bears might have originated about 600,000 years ago, an international team reports April 20 in Science.
Previously, studies suggested that the polar bear, Ursus maritimus, emerged much later, about 150,000 years back. But many of these estimates were based on analyzing limited genetic information that?s passed down only through the maternal bloodline called mitochondrial DNA.
In the new study, researchers partially decoded DNA inherited from both parents from 45 bears, including polar, brown and black bears. Called nuclear DNA, this type of DNA carries the majority of an organism?s genetic instructions. A comparison of the various species? nuclear DNA indicates that polar bears are much older than previously thought. This means that populations likely survived through several glacial periods and the warmer times between.
But the polar bear population?s lack of genetic variation suggests that the warm phases created a genetic bottleneck, wiping out many individual bears. Study coauthor Frank Hailer of the Biodiversity and Climate Research Centre in Frankfurt says that adding climate change, speeded up by humans, to stresses such as habitat loss, pollution and hunting might pose a threat to polar bear survival.Found in: Earth, Environment and Life

Evernote Raising $50 Million To $100 Million At A $1 Billion+ Valuation
Cloud note and storage app Evernote is raising a massive fifth round of funding of between $50 to $100 million at a valuation that tops $1 billion, according to our sources. Contrary to what Business Insider?is reporting, the final details of which investors will participate are still being finalized but there's strong interest in the Valley and beyond. Investor Meritech is believed to be in the lead, the round is expected to go through, and it could all close in the next couple of weeks. Another Siri-Like App, Voice Answer, Hits The App Store For Those Of Us Without The iPhone 4S
Looks like Apple might be loosening its grip even more on voice recognition apps? Or, it simply just feels that the competition is not as good as its own native Siri. We've just gotten word from Netherlands-based developer Sparkling Apps that its voice-response app, Voice Answer -- rejected by Apple for the nearly three months -- has been approved by Apple and is now live in the App Store, and usable on any iPhone, iPod or iPad running iOS 4.2 or later. It took "almost three months of negotiating, tweaking and pushing," developer Martijn van der Spek tells TechCrunch. Like Siri, the app is based on data from Wolfram Alpha, among other sources, and lets users ask questions by either speaking to the app or typing in a question. The Durham Performing Arts Center will present Bring It On: The Musical on April 17-22 in its 2,700-seat, state-of-the-art theater, in the American Tobacco District in downtown Durham, NC. It is a up-close-and-personal behind-the-scenes look at the world of competitive cheerleading as dramatized on the silver screen in the teenage comedy Bring It On (2000), directed by Peyton Reed and starring Kirsten Dunst, and its four direct-to-DVD sequels: Bring It On Again (2004), Bring It On: All or Nothing (2006), Bring It On: In It to Win It (2007), and Bring It On: Fight to the Finish (2009).

?Leading the cast are Taylor Louderman and Adrienne Warren. Louderman, playing the role of Campbell, is a 20-year-old newcomer from the University of Michigan. Warren, previously seen in the National Tour of Dreamgirls at the Ahmanson Theatre, portrays Danielle, a role she originated in Bring It On: The Musical?s developmental production at the Alliance Theatre in Atlanta [from Jan. 15 to Feb. 20, 2011].
?Ryann Redmond, a 2011 graduate of New York University, recreates the role of Bridget that she originated in the Alliance Theatre Production. Elle McLemore (Disney?s ?Suite Life on Deck?) plays Eva, and Jason Gotay (Broadway?s Rising Stars and Rent) stars as Randall.
