40 percent of parents give young kids cough/cold medicine that they shouldn't

Apr. 22, 2013 ? Children can get five to 10 colds each year, so it's not surprising that adults often turn to over-the-counter cough and cold medicines to relieve their little ones' symptoms. But a new University of Michigan poll shows that many are giving young kids medicines that they should not use.

More than 40 percent of parents reported giving their children under age 4 cough medicine or multi-symptom cough and cold medicine, according to the latest University of Michigan Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health. Twenty-five percent gave those children decongestants.

In 2008, the federal Food and Drug Administration issued an advisory that these over-the-counter medicines not be used in infants and children under age 2. They have not been proven effective for young children and may cause serious side effects, says Matthew M. Davis, M.D., M.A.P.P., director of the C.S. Mott Children's Hospital National Poll on Children's Health.

In response to the FDA, manufacturers of over-the-counter cough and cold products changed their labels back in 2008, to state that the medicines should not be used for children under 4 years old.

"These products don't reduce the time the infection will lasts and misuse could lead to serious harm," says Davis. "What can be confusing, however, is that often these products are labeled prominently as 'children's' medications. The details are often on the back of the box, in small print. That's where parents and caregivers can find instructions that they should not be used in children under 4 years old," Davis says

The side effects from use of cough and cold medicines in young children may include allergic reactions, increased or uneven heart rate, drowsiness or sleeplessness, slow and shallow breathing, confusion or hallucinations, convulsions, nausea and constipation.

The poll found that use of the cough and cold medicines in children age four and under did not differ by parent gender, race/ethnicity or by household income.

"Products like these may work for adults, and parents think it could help their children as well. But what's good for adults is not always good for children," says Davis.

Davis says parents need to be vigilant about reading the directions and should always call their pediatrician or health care provider about questions regarding over-the-counter medications.

"Because young children often suffer from cold-like symptoms, more research is needed to test the safety and efficacy of these cough and cold medicines in our littlest patients," Davis says.

RIM seeks probe into report on BlackBerry returns

TORONTO (AP) ? The maker of the BlackBerry said Friday that it wants U.S. and Canadian regulators to investigate a "false and misleading" report by a financial analyst that claims the company's new smartphone is being returned in unusually high numbers.

Thorsten Heins, the CEO of Research In Motion Ltd., said returns of the new BlackBerry Z10 are in line with industry norms. In a statement Friday, Heins said Thursday's report from research and investment firm Detwiler Fenton has to be challenged because it is either a complete misreading of the data or a willful manipulation.

"The data we have collected from our retail and carrier partners demonstrates that customers are satisfied with their devices," Heins said.

Anne Buckley, general counsel and chief compliance officer with Detwiler Fenton, said the firm is confident in its research methodology and welcomed any regulatory inquiry.

The BlackBerry, pioneered in 1999, had been the dominant smartphone for on-the-go business people and other consumers before the iPhone debuted in 2007 and showed that phones can handle much more than email and phone calls. After numerous delays, RIM is attempting a comeback with phones running its new BlackBerry 10 system. The Z10 is the first of those devices.

The Detwiler Fenton report says "key retail partners have seen a significant increase in Z10 returns to the point where, in several cases, returns are now exceeding sales, a phenomenon we have never seen before." It says the biggest customer complaints are the "unintuitive nature of the user interface, the maps app, and the lack of apps."

Buckley provided a copy of the report to The Associated Press. The version sent does not contain the name of the analyst who wrote it.

"Detwiler Fenton is not the only research provider publishing similar reports regarding customer reactions, sales, and returns of the Blackberry Z10," Buckley said in a statement. She also said that neither the research analyst nor any officer or director of Detwiler Fenton has any financial interest in RIM.

RIM's stock fell nearly 8 percent on Thursday, after the report came out. The stock is up 12 cents, or nearly 1 percent, to $13.67 in midday trading Friday.

Verizon Wireless, the largest wireless carrier in the U.S., also refuted the claim of a large number of returns. Verizon spokeswoman Brenda Raney said in an email that "after the first 14 days, the quality performance of the Z10 has been in line with similar devices we've launched."

RIM, which is based in Waterloo, Canada, wants an investigation by the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission and the Ontario Securities Commission.

RIM's chief legal officer, Steve Zipperstein, said that while people are entitled to opinions about the merits of various smartphones, that doesn't extend to "false statements of material fact."

PFT: Geno Smith will attend NFL Draft

    GenoGetty Images

While some teams picking in the top 10 may be blowing smoke about their interest in West Virginia quarterback Geno Smith, he?s apparently willing to assume that at least one of them has rubbed the sticks together hard enough to make a flame.

Per a source with knowledge of the situation, Smith has accepted an invitation to attend the 2013 draft in New York City.

Unlike last year, when everyone knew that quarterbacks Andrew Luck and Robert Griffin III would be the first and second selections, it?s unclear when the top quarterbacks in this year?s draft pool will be plucked.? It?s still not completely clear which quarterback will go first.

A loose consensus points to Smith.? But no one will know for sure until the time comes to make the picks.

Chances are Smith will go in the top 10, as high as the Jaguars at No. 2 or possibly as low as the Jets at No. 9, with the Raiders (No. 3), the Eagles (No. 4), the Cardinals (No. 7), and the Bills (No. 8) possibly pouncing in between.

If Smith gets past No. 9, he could do a Quinn-Rodgers slide into the 20s, with a team at the top of round two likely to trade back into the first round to stop the bleeding.

The good news for Smith, if he slips, is that the NFL brings far more players to Radio City Music Hall than previously.? Even if he?s the last man taken on Thursday night, there will still be other guys in the green room, chewing gum and/or diddling the maid.
